The 2026 National Local Economic Development Summit has underscored the importance of science, technology and innovation as foundational drivers of sustainable municipal growth.

The summit brought together leaders from government, academia, and the private sector, who emphasized the need for local governments to adopt modern, technology-driven approaches to service delivery and economic development.

Discussions highlighted initiatives such as the expansion of Living Labs to support youth entrepreneurship and the deployment of innovative solutions, including non-sewered sanitation systems, to improve public services.

South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, stressed the importance of breaking down institutional silos and strengthening collaboration between universities, industry, and government.

He noted that building effective partnerships and social compacts across sectors is essential to achieving meaningful economic transformation and developing future-ready communities.
