Safaricom
Ethiopia Telecommunications PLC has hosted a high-level delegation led by
Leslie Maasdorp, Chief Executive Officer of British International Investment
(BII), at its headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The
visit, which also included Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO of Safaricom PLC, was
received by Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte and the company’s senior
leadership team.

Discussions
during the engagement focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership
between Safaricom and BII, with executives highlighting the role of the
development finance institution as a key shareholder and strategic partner in
supporting the company’s growth.
Ndegwa
noted that BII has played a significant role in Safaricom Ethiopia’s
development, describing its approach as pragmatic and forward-looking. He also
reiterated Ethiopia’s strategic importance to the Safaricom Group and commended
employees for their contributions to the company’s progress.

Maasdorp
emphasised BII’s continued commitment to investing in Ethiopia and other
frontier markets, noting that such markets present significant opportunities
for economic transformation despite being perceived as underdeveloped. He added
that BII’s current strategy prioritises investments that support business
growth, job creation and long-term development.
The
visit underscores ongoing collaboration between Safaricom and BII, reflecting a
shared focus on unlocking Ethiopia’s economic potential through sustained
investment and partnership.
