United States calls for reform and greater efficiency at International Telecommunication Union Council

The United States has called for stronger reforms, improved transparency and greater efficiency within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), emphasizing the need for the organization to remain focused on delivering practical outcomes in global telecommunications development.

The statement was made by the U.S. delegation during sessions of the ITU Council, where discussions focused on the future direction of global digital governance and international telecommunications cooperation.

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Organization Affairs noted that the United States, as a long-standing member and the largest financial contributor to the ITU, is advocating for reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and ensuring the organization remains results-oriented.

The delegation stressed that maintaining effective oversight and accountability within the ITU is essential to ensuring that the organization continues to advance global connectivity and supports inclusive digital development across member states.

The remarks reflect ongoing international discussions on the governance of digital infrastructure, spectrum management and global telecommunications policy as countries seek to align regulatory frameworks with accelerating technological change.
