Stephen Bereaux, candidate for Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has formally presented his candidature to the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) during a preparatory meeting held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The presentation took place against the backdrop of discussions with African telecommunications delegates, where Bereaux engaged with representatives on priorities for strengthening the International Telecommunication Union’s role in advancing global digital development.

In his remarks, Bereaux expressed appreciation to the ATU delegates for their engagement and highlighted the importance of Africa’s participation in shaping the future of the ITU. He underscored his commitment to a stronger and more effective regional presence that brings the Union closer to the needs of its member states.

He outlined his professional background, citing over two decades of experience supporting the ITU’s mandate in developing countries, more than 15 years of direct involvement with the organization, and prior roles as a developing country regulator and Chief Executive Officer. He also referenced his current position as Chief of Administration and Finance at the ITU, as well as previous leadership in the organization’s transformation programme and his tenure as Deputy to the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau.

Bereaux stated that his candidacy is guided by a vision anchored on excellence, transformation and collaboration, and emphasized that the role of Deputy Secretary-General should function as the organization’s chief operating officer, focused on accountability and results delivery for member states.

He further noted his support from The Bahamas and the Caribbean, stating that his candidacy reflects the perspective of Small Island Developing States and their need for meaningful global connectivity. He added that, if elected, he would be the first ITU elected official from a Small Island Developing State.

The meeting formed part of ongoing engagements ahead of the ITU leadership selection process, with discussions focusing on the future direction of global telecommunications governance and development cooperation.
