Nigeria is seeking to strengthen its intellectual property ecosystem through closer collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as the country continues to position itself as a leading innovation and technology hub in Africa.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, held discussions with WIPO Director-General Daren Tang and his delegation in Abuja, focusing on expanding cooperation in innovation, creativity, digital transformation and intellectual property development.

The meeting follows earlier engagements between both parties during the Ministerial Summit held on the sidelines of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing innovation-driven economic growth.

Dr. Tijani said the establishment of a WIPO office in Abuja, one of only seven such offices globally, demonstrates international confidence in Nigeria’s growing influence in the digital, technology and creative sectors.

According to the Minister, discussions centered on strengthening intellectual property awareness and protection while unlocking greater value from the creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities of Nigerians.

The engagement also explored ways intellectual property can serve as a catalyst for economic empowerment, particularly for technology entrepreneurs, innovators, creators and young digital talent across the country.

Nigeria and WIPO are expected to work together to expand access to intellectual property resources and opportunities, enabling more innovators to commercialize their ideas and build sustainable businesses.

Officials noted that stronger intellectual property frameworks will play a critical role in supporting job creation, encouraging investment, promoting innovation and contributing to the country's broader economic development objectives.
