Zimbabwe has officially
launched its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the AI Grand
Challenge, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to harness
emerging technologies for socio-economic development and innovation.
Speaking at the launch under
the theme “AI for Impact,” Minister of Information Communication Technology,
Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, emphasized the government's
commitment to ensuring that artificial intelligence delivers practical benefits
for citizens and supports inclusive national development.
The minister said the
strategy is designed to promote the use of AI solutions that address real-world
challenges across critical sectors, including healthcare, agriculture,
education, and financial services. She stressed that technological innovation
must be people-centered and contribute to improving livelihoods across both
urban and rural communities.
According to Mavetera, the
strategy prioritizes the development of AI systems that reflect Zimbabwe’s
diverse languages, cultures, and social realities, ensuring that technology
remains accessible and relevant to local needs.
The launch also introduced
the AI Grand Challenge, an initiative aimed at encouraging young entrepreneurs,
innovators, researchers, and technology developers to create solutions that
tackle pressing national challenges. The programme is expected to provide a
platform for local talent to showcase innovative ideas while contributing to
the growth of Zimbabwe’s digital economy.
Addressing participants, the
minister called on the country's youth to take an active role in shaping
Zimbabwe’s technological future, noting that the emergence of AI presents
significant opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
The National AI Strategy
forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader digital transformation agenda and seeks to
position the country as a regional leader in the adoption and development of
emerging technologies. Government officials believe the initiative will help
foster a vibrant AI ecosystem capable of driving economic growth, improving
public service delivery, and advancing sustainable development goals.
The launch brought together
policymakers, technology leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and other
stakeholders from across Zimbabwe’s digital ecosystem to discuss the role of
artificial intelligence in shaping the country's future.
