Botswana has
intensified its campaign for a seat on the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) Radio Regulations Board (RRB) during the 2027–2030 term, using the
platform of the second African Preparatory Meeting (APM26-2) to rally support
for its candidate, Ms. Basebi Mosinyi.
The APM26-2,
convened by the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) and hosted by the
Government of Zimbabwe through the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory
Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), took place at the Cresta Sprayview Hotel in
Victoria Falls from 27th to 29th May 2026. The gathering followed the ITU
Regional Development Forum for Africa (RDF-AFR), held from 25th to 26th May
2026.
The meeting
drew over 230 participants from 35 ATU member states, who deliberated on
Africa’s common positions ahead of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026
(PP-26) and other critical telecommunications and ICT policy issues.
Botswana’s
delegation was led by the country’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Mrs.
Sarah S. Molosiwa, who spearheaded lobbying efforts for Ms. Mosinyi’s
candidature. In her engagements, Ambassador Molosiwa underscored Botswana’s
readiness to contribute to the development and effective implementation of
international radio regulatory frameworks.
Ms. Mosinyi’s
candidacy, the delegation noted, is aimed at strengthening Africa’s
representation in global telecommunications governance. Botswana participated
actively in the technical and policy discussions, contributing to the
formulation of common African positions for PP-26.
The RRB is
responsible for approving rules on the use of radio frequencies and satellite
orbits, making it a key organ in managing global spectrum resources. Election
to the Board is scheduled for the 2027–2030 term.
