The Kenya Space Agency (KSA)
and the European Space Agency (ESA) have strengthened their strategic
cooperation aimed at advancing space innovation and Earth observation
capabilities through new collaborative initiatives and high-level engagements
in Italy.
The Director General of the
Kenya Space Agency, Maj. Gen. Hillary Kipkosgey, delivered a keynote address at
the opening ceremony of the ESA Innovation Summit at ESA ESRIN in Frascati. In
his remarks, he highlighted Kenya’s ongoing efforts to build a robust national
space ecosystem driven by innovation, research, and international partnerships.
A key development
highlighted during the summit was the establishment of the Africa Business
Innovation Lab (ABIL), a joint initiative between KSA and ESA designed to
support startups leveraging space-based technologies in Kenya. The programme is
expected to strengthen entrepreneurship and innovation within the country’s
growing space sector.
On the sidelines of the
summit, Maj. Gen. Kipkosgey held bilateral discussions with ESA Earth
Observation Director Simonetta Cheli to explore expanded cooperation in Earth
observation and related applications. The discussions focused on leveraging
ESA’s technical expertise to support Kenya’s space development priorities.
The meeting also brought
together senior ESA officials including Rune Floberghagen, Benjamin Koetz and
Alex Chunet, alongside Charles Mwangi from the Kenya Space Agency.
KSA noted that the
strengthened partnership with ESA reflects ongoing efforts to accelerate the
development of Kenya’s space capabilities and expand the use of satellite data
for national development applications. The agency expressed appreciation for ESA’s
continued support in advancing Kenya’s space ambitions.
