MTN
Uganda has called for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in
journalism, emphasizing that while the technology can enhance newsroom
operations, it cannot replace editorial integrity, professional judgment or the
pursuit of truth.
The
message was delivered during the Uganda Editors’ Guild Annual Editors’
Convention, where media professionals, technology leaders and editors gathered
to discuss the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and
journalism.
Representing
MTN Uganda, General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit, Ibrahim Senyonga,
urged participants to adopt a balanced perspective on AI, describing it as a
tool whose impact depends on how it is used rather than an inherent threat or
solution to journalism.
He
noted that, like previous technological innovations, artificial intelligence
has the potential to strengthen journalism when deployed responsibly and
ethically.
According
to Senyonga, MTN Uganda has integrated AI into its operations to improve
network management, enhance cybersecurity, optimize customer experience and
proactively identify service issues before they affect customers.
He
said these experiences demonstrate that artificial intelligence delivers the
greatest value when applied to solving practical challenges and improving
services for people.
Extending
the discussion to the media sector, Senyonga observed that AI can help news
organizations improve efficiency by accelerating research, identifying trends,
translating content and automating repetitive tasks.
However,
he stressed that technology cannot replace the essential human qualities that
underpin credible journalism, including editorial judgment, ethical
decision-making and the commitment to factual reporting.
MTN
Uganda said its engagement with the Uganda Editors’ Guild reflects its broader
commitment to supporting a strong and independent media sector that promotes
informed public discourse, accountability and national development.
The
company emphasized that collaboration between the technology and media sectors
will be increasingly important as Uganda advances its digital transformation
agenda and adopts emerging technologies across different industries.
