The
Government of Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Alliance
of Bioversity International and CIAT to strengthen collaboration on climate
action, landscape restoration, and sustainable livelihoods.
The
agreement was formalised in Nairobi in partnership with the Ministry of
Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, bringing together senior government
officials and representatives of the Alliance. Among those present were
Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi, Director General Juan Lucas
Restrepo Ibiza, and Managing Director for Africa Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg.

The
partnership is expected to accelerate the implementation of solutions
addressing Kenya’s environmental and agricultural priorities, including
ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and the promotion of sustainable
livelihoods. It will also deepen cooperation in research, policy support,
digital innovation, and capacity development.
A
key focus of the collaboration will be translating scientific research into
practical outcomes that benefit farmers, communities, and ecosystems. This
includes advancing forestry and agroforestry initiatives such as the national
15 Billion Trees Growing Programme.
The
MoU builds on existing initiatives in Kenya, including projects aimed at
supporting ecosystem restoration and improving rural livelihoods through
innovative approaches.

Officials
say the agreement reinforces a shared commitment to transforming Kenya’s
agri-food and forestry systems, positioning them for long-term sustainability
and resilience in the face of climate change.
