The
Kingdom of Lesotho has officially launched its National Public Health Emergency
Operations Centre (PHEOC), marking a significant step in enhancing the
country’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health
emergencies.
The
initiative was implemented with support from the Africa CDC and the African
Development Bank Group, as part of a broader flagship programme aimed at
strengthening health security systems across 23 African Union Member States.
The
establishment of the PHEOC follows the training of 40 health officials in
Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM), equipping them with the skills
needed to effectively coordinate responses to health crises.

Speaking
at the launch, Deputy Principal Secretary Matsoanelo Monyobi reaffirmed the
government’s commitment to ensuring the centre is fully operational and
sustainably resourced.
Officials
say the new facility will play a critical role in improving coordination,
surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms, contributing to a more resilient
national health system.
The
launch reflects ongoing continental efforts to strengthen preparedness and
response capabilities, particularly in the wake of recent global and regional
health challenges.
