Rwanda’s
Ministry of ICT and Innovation has concluded a multi-day Artificial
Intelligence Trust and Safety Workshop aimed at strengthening the responsible
use of emerging technologies within the country’s judiciary.

The
workshop, delivered in partnership with the United Nations Development
Programme Rwanda and High Commission of Canada in Rwanda, was hosted at the
Rwanda Judiciary. It focused on building frameworks to ensure the secure,
ethical, and accountable deployment of AI systems in judicial processes.
Discussions
centered on reinforcing governance structures, promoting human accountability,
and safeguarding judicial integrity as digital technologies become increasingly
integrated into legal systems.

In
remarks during the opening session, Deputy Chief Justice Justice Hitiyaremye
highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence on legal
processes, including evidence gathering and legal research. He noted that for
the judiciary to remain credible and effective, it must actively engage with
technological advancements while maintaining sound judgment and openness to
innovation.
Officials
say the initiative reflects Rwanda’s broader commitment to aligning
technological growth with robust regulatory frameworks, ensuring that
innovation supports the rule of law and public trust in judicial institutions.
