The
Government of Israel has appointed Ran Livne as the new Director of the Israel
Space Agency, marking a leadership transition at a critical moment for the
country’s space sector.
Livne,
who has been active in driving innovation within the space industry, assumes
the role with a focus on strengthening the agency’s strategic relevance in
national security and economic development. His appointment comes amid growing
recognition of space as a key domain for technological advancement and
long-term infrastructure development.
In
taking up the position, Livne steps away from his involvement with Moonshot, a
company he described as having strong future potential. He expressed confidence
in the leadership team and ongoing work at the company.
Livne
acknowledged the support of Minister Gila Gamliel, who entrusted him with the
leadership role, and reflected on the influence of the late Rona Ramon, who
played a role in his early career in the space sector, as well as the legacy of
astronaut Ilan Ramon.
He
noted that while Israel has developed strong capabilities in space, driven by
advanced science and engineering expertise, the Israel Space Agency has
historically played a more limited role in the sector’s progress. He indicated
that his leadership will focus on repositioning the agency to play a more
active and strategic role.
Livne
emphasized the need for a disciplined and focused approach, prioritizing
projects that support both established stakeholders and emerging players within
Israel’s space ecosystem. He highlighted the importance of collaboration across
government, industry, and academia to build a more robust and effective
national space programme.
The
appointment signals a renewed effort to align the agency’s activities with
broader national priorities while fostering innovation and growth within the
space sector.
