The
Executive Secretary of the Commission Climat pour la Région du Sahel (CCRS),
Issifi Boureima, has held a virtual meeting with the European Union’s Special
Representative for the Sahel, João Cravinho, to advance collaboration on
climate resilience and sustainable development in the Sahel region.
The
meeting, held on April 1, 2026, follows earlier engagements between the two
officials, including discussions on the sidelines of the Aswan Forum in Egypt
and Cravinho’s recent visit to several Central Sahel member states.
Discussions
focused on areas of mutual interest aligned with the CCRS mandate, with both
parties exploring ways to strengthen synergy in supporting climate resilience
policies across Sahelian countries. Boureima emphasized the need to align
bilateral and multilateral cooperation initiatives with the development
priorities of countries in the region, highlighting the importance of
establishing a coherent framework that reflects the aspirations of local
communities.

Both
sides agreed to promote structured dialogue and enhanced institutional
cooperation to reinforce resilience-building efforts. Priority actions were
identified for joint implementation, alongside a commitment to leverage
existing strategic and operational achievements of CCRS and opportunities
provided by mechanisms such as the Sahel Alliance to mobilize additional
resources.
Boureima
underscored the strategic importance of the Sahel, describing it as a critical
bridge between North and sub-Saharan Africa. He noted that sustained and
coordinated efforts are essential to achieving resilient, stable, and
prosperous development in the region, particularly in the context of evolving
geopolitical and security dynamics.
The
engagement reflects growing collaboration between regional institutions and
international partners aimed at addressing climate challenges and promoting
long-term stability in the Sahel.
