The
Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has commissioned its 40th Technology
and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at Soroti University, in a move aimed at
strengthening innovation, intellectual property protection, and technology
development among students.

The
centre was officially launched under the leadership of URSB Commissioner for
Finance and Administration, Mr. Ambrose Ekaju, and is expected to serve as a
platform for students and young innovators to access global patent databases,
protect their inventions, and commercialise ideas for wider market use.
According
to URSB, the TISC initiative is designed to function as a launchpad for
homegrown innovation by enabling students to develop, protect and scale
technologies under Uganda’s intellectual property framework.

During
the launch, students showcased several innovations, including Smart KARA, a
portable electricity access solution powered by NFC technology; an AI-based
fruit sorting system designed to improve agricultural product quality; and
smart education and industrial solutions aimed at supporting Uganda’s Fourth
Industrial Revolution agenda.
URSB
reaffirmed its commitment to supporting student innovators through patenting,
protection and scaling of locally developed technologies to enhance their
competitiveness in global markets.
