The
African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has officially launched Africa’s
preparatory process for the 2028 World Telecommunication Standardization
Assembly (WTSA-28) with the opening of its first regional preparatory meeting
in Accra.
The
meeting marks the start of a coordinated continental effort to develop Africa’s
common positions and define key technical and policy priorities that will shape
global ICT standardization in the coming years.

The
opening ceremony was led by ATU Secretary General John Omo, alongside Samuel
Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and
Innovations.
Also
in attendance were Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, Director General of the National
Communications Authority of Ghana, and Seizo Onoe, Director of the
Telecommunication Standardization Bureau at the International Telecommunication
Union.

Discussions
at the meeting are expected to focus on aligning Africa’s priorities within the
global ICT standardization agenda, ensuring the continent plays a more active
role in shaping international standards and frameworks.
The
initiative reflects growing efforts to position Africa as a key contributor in
global digital policy and standards development ahead of WTSA-28.
