The
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Academy, in partnership with the
Digital Bridge Institute, has launched a capacity-building programme in Abuja
aimed at strengthening policymaker expertise in fibre optic infrastructure
deployment.
The
week-long, in-person training brings together 27 policymakers and government
officials to provide practical insights into the planning, deployment, and
regulation of fibre optic networks. The programme covers key areas including
regulatory frameworks, alignment with national broadband strategies,
infrastructure sharing, and stakeholder engagement.

The
training was officially opened by Engr. Oshadami Sunday, Executive Commissioner
for Technical Services at the Nigerian Communications Commission, representing
Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida. Other representatives included Viola
Usoro Askia on behalf of the Digital Bridge Institute, and Inga Stefanowicz
from the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.
Organisers
said the initiative is designed to equip policymakers with the knowledge
required to support the expansion of high-capacity broadband infrastructure,
which is critical to advancing digital transformation and connectivity across
Nigeria.

The
programme is supported by the European Union under its Global Gateway
initiative, which focuses on promoting sustainable and secure digital
infrastructure development worldwide.
