The
Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) has commemorated the 65th anniversary of
Yuri Gagarin’s historic first human spaceflight through a series of events held
as part of Yuri’s Night 2026.
The
day’s activities began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Space Science and
Geospatial Institute, organised in collaboration with the Russian Embassy, to
honour Gagarin’s legacy in human space exploration.

An
afternoon programme held at the Russian Center for Science and Culture brought
together students, educators, and space enthusiasts for presentations on space
history and an inter-school Space Trivia competition aimed at promoting
interest in space science among young people.
The
session was officially opened by Dimitry Brilev, Representative of the Russian
House, and Kirubel Menber Alemu, Managing Director of ESSS.

A
key highlight of the event was a live video conference with Russian cosmonaut
Alexander Grebenkin, who connected from the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.
During the session, he shared insights from his experience aboard the
International Space Station as part of the SpaceX Crew-8 mission and engaged
directly with students by responding to their questions.
Organisers
said the event forms part of broader efforts to promote space science education
and international collaboration, while inspiring the next generation of
scientists and innovators in Ethiopia.
