The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has welcomed international delegates to the 2nd Space Weather User Workshop at the SANSA Space Weather Centre in Hermanus, as global stakeholders gather to strengthen the delivery of space weather information services for the aviation sector.

The workshop, organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Meteorology Panel, brings together space weather information providers and users from around the world to discuss ways of improving the ICAO Space Weather Information Service.

Opening the event, SANSA Chief Executive Officer, Humbulani Mudau, welcomed participants and underscored the importance of international collaboration in advancing space weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities. The workshop serves as a platform for experts, service providers and end-users to exchange experiences, identify operational challenges and explore opportunities to enhance the accuracy and reliability of space weather information.

Space weather, which is driven by solar activity and conditions in near-Earth space, can significantly impact aviation operations, satellite communications, navigation systems and other critical infrastructure. Accurate and timely space weather information is therefore essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of global air navigation services.

The workshop aims to foster closer cooperation between information providers and users while supporting ongoing efforts to refine standards, products and services within the ICAO framework. Discussions are expected to focus on user requirements, service performance, operational needs and future developments in space weather forecasting.

SANSA's hosting of the workshop highlights South Africa's growing role in the global space weather community and its contribution to international efforts aimed at enhancing aviation safety through improved space weather services.

The gathering is expected to produce recommendations that will support the continued evolution of the ICAO Space Weather Information Service and strengthen the resilience of aviation systems worldwide.
