The Director of the Ghana
Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI), Dr Joseph Bremang Tandoh, has
met with the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, to
initiate discussions on integrating space-based capabilities into Ghana’s
national maritime security operations.
The meeting marks a step
towards multi-sector collaboration aimed at applying satellite technology to
modernise the Ghana Armed Forces, monitor territorial waters and combat
emerging security risks across the Gulf of Guinea.
Rear Admiral Bessing
emphasised the critical role of satellite technology in strengthening defence
capabilities and improving maritime surveillance.
As part of the growing
partnership, the Ghana Navy will participate in key discussions at the Ghana
Space Conference 2026 on the application of space systems for defence and
maritime intelligence.
The conference is scheduled
to take place from November 16 to 18, 2026, at the National Communications
Authority (NCA) Tower in Airport City, Accra.
The event will also feature
technical site visits designed to give delegates first-hand experience of
Ghana’s space infrastructure, including space instrumentation, satellite data
reception and geospatial surveillance systems.
Participants will have the
opportunity to tour national space facilities, examine radio telescope
infrastructure and learn how satellite passes are processed into solutions for
security, climate resilience and maritime intelligence.
The visits will also provide
opportunities for engineers, researchers, investors and defence professionals
to engage with the engineers and operators responsible for maintaining Ghana’s
orbital ground systems.
The planned discussions and
technical engagements are expected to highlight the potential of space
technology to support national security and strengthen Ghana’s maritime
intelligence capabilities.
