Ghana hosted the Africa
Regional Group’s commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive
Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on the sidelines of the 66th Session of Working
Group B of the CTBT Organization Preparatory Commission at the Vienna International
Centre.
The event brought together
African delegations, CTBTO leadership, international partners, and experts to
reflect on three decades of commitment to a world free of nuclear testing.
Presentations were made by experts from Ghana, Algeria, South Africa, and Kenya,
highlighting the sustained partnerships and progress achieved by the continent
through engagement with the CTBTO.
The commemoration reaffirmed
Africa’s dedication to the Treaty’s entry into force and emphasized its role in
strengthening international peace and security. Ghana, as convenor, called on
all remaining Annex 2 States to sign and ratify the Treaty to advance a
nuclear-test-free world.
Ambassador Matilda Aku
Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in
Vienna and Chair of the IAEA Board of Governors (2024–2025), underscored the
continent’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, noting the
importance of collective effort in ensuring global security.
