Kenya
Space Agency has launched the Kenya Space Sector Data Sharing Framework 2026, a
major initiative aimed at strengthening data governance and enhancing the use
of space-derived information for national development.
The
framework was developed in collaboration with the British High Commission
Nairobi, the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability, and VIFFA
Consult. It forms a key component of the Kenya Space Agency Strategic Plan
2023–2027, which focuses on promoting structured data governance within the
country’s space sector.
Speaking
at the launch, Director General of the agency, Hillary Kipkosgey, described the
framework as a critical step toward establishing a unified and coordinated
space data ecosystem. He noted that the initiative is designed to bring
together Earth Observation data users and stakeholders across government,
academia, the private sector, and development partners into a single
collaborative platform.
According
to the agency, the framework aims to maximise the value of Earth Observation
data by improving access, coordination, and utilisation of space-based
information across sectors.
As
part of its implementation, the framework will be operationalised through the
creation of the National Earth Observation Data Council, which will serve as
the central body responsible for coordination, oversight, and strategic
direction of Earth Observation data management in Kenya.
Officials
say the launch marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to
leverage space science and technology to drive sustainable development,
innovation, and socio-economic growth.
