Rwandan President Paul
Kagame has called for inclusive participation in shaping the future of
artificial intelligence (AI), saying the technology’s benefits will compound if
everyone has a voice in its development.
“The benefits of A.I. will
compound, if we all have a voice in shaping the future of this new technology.
As a Commission, our job is to keep asking the hard questions, and commit our
time, expertise and resources to find practical solutions,” President Kagame
said.
Kagame, who co-chairs the AI
for Good Global Commission, made the remarks during a virtual meeting with
fellow co-chair Marc Benioff, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of
Salesforce, and vice-chair Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU), alongside other commissioners.
The meeting reviewed
progress made to date and discussed next steps to ensure AI delivers broadly
shared economic and social benefits for people worldwide.
The discussions form part of
the commission’s work to address key questions surrounding AI and identify
practical solutions to help ensure the technology’s benefits are shared widely.
