Ghana and United States deepen digital cooperation with focus on AI, satellite technology and skills development

Ghana and the United States are exploring stronger collaboration in digital transformation, satellite technology, and digital skills development following high-level discussions between the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and a visiting U.S. government delegation.

The meeting was led by Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and included representatives from the United States National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the U.S. Embassy in Ghana.

The U.S. delegation comprised Brooke Donilon, Chief of Staff at the NTIA; Jaisha Wray, Associate Administrator of the NTIA; Laurie Kelleher, Acting Commercial Counselor at the U.S. Embassy; and Victoria Agbai, Commercial Specialist.

Discussions focused on Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, including ongoing policy and regulatory reforms, the country’s Artificial Intelligence strategy, and efforts to position Ghana as a leading digital hub in Africa.

The U.S. delegation also expressed appreciation to the Ministry for hosting, for the first time in Ghana, satellite training sessions organized under the United States Telecommunication Training Institute (USTTI).

During the engagement, the Minister highlighted the significance of the One Million Coders Programme in equipping young Ghanaians with coding and digital skills required for the future economy. He called for expanded partnerships to support digital capacity building and innovation.

Samuel Nartey George further emphasized the importance of responsible satellite technology deployment, stressing the need for strong legal and regulatory frameworks that protect national interests, promote fair competition, and ensure security.

The U.S. delegation commended Ghana’s digital ambitions and reiterated its interest in supporting collaborative initiatives in areas including digital skills training, connectivity expansion, satellite technology, and responsible innovation.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation aimed at promoting inclusive digital development and creating economic opportunities through technology and innovation.
