The Director General of the
Regional African Satellite Communication Organisation, Timothy Ashong, has
joined leaders and experts across the continent in commemorating Africa Day,
calling for stronger collaboration and investment in technology, innovation and
infrastructure to drive Africa’s future development.
In a statement marking the
occasion, Mr. Ashong said Africa stands at a critical moment in its history,
with increasing momentum in sectors including digital infrastructure, aviation,
connectivity, satellite navigation and space development.
According to him, the
continent’s long-term growth and resilience will depend on the ability of
African countries to work together, strengthen institutions and invest in human
capital and strategic infrastructure.

Mr. Ashong noted that
satellite navigation systems, digital technologies and emerging innovations are
becoming increasingly important in supporting transportation, trade,
agriculture, disaster management and broader economic integration across
Africa.
He stressed the need for
African countries to transition from dependence to capability, from
fragmentation to coordination and from consumption to innovation as the
continent seeks to position itself competitively in the global digital economy.
The RASCOM Director General
also highlighted the importance of Africa’s youth, describing them as the
continent’s greatest resource due to their creativity, innovation and
determination in shaping Africa’s future.
Africa Day is celebrated
annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African
Unity, now the African Union, and to reflect on the continent’s progress, unity
and development aspirations.
